Germany → Republika Srpska car import calculator

Estimate what importing a used car from Germany to Republika Srpska costs: the car, export plates, tolls, customs duty, 17% VAT, homologation and first registration. Every fee is prefilled with September 2026 rates and can be edited. The result is an estimate, not a quote.

Car price

Customs base, net (€)
-

The dealer invoices the car without the 19% German VAT because it leaves the EU, so the customs base is the net amount: the advertised price divided by 1.19. Most dealers keep 19% until they receive the export confirmation (Ausgangsvermerk). It's refunded, so it's cash flow rather than a cost.

Car

Engine size, model year and drivetrain set the FBiH road fee, environmental fee and cantonal tax. The registration entity (FBiH or RS) is chosen in the menu at the top. Power sets the compulsory-insurance premium: insurers charge by the combustion engine's kW; enter that amount yourself in the Registration section.

Dealer's charge for filing the export with German customs and getting the EUR.1 stamped. Some include it, some charge more. Without EUR.1 you pay 15% duty.

Only if the seller won't file the ABD and EUR.1 themselves (typical with a private seller).

Customs require a notarised contract when buying from a private person. A dealer invoice doesn't need this.

Free when the CoC comes with the car. A reissue usually runs €70–250 and takes days, so ask before you travel.

The plates are valid only as long as this insurance. The default is an estimate; ask the insurer. You get a paper Doppelkarte, not an eVB number. Check that Bosnia (BIH) is listed on it.

The registration office fee for export plates, €31.40 under the federal fee schedule (GebOSt no. 221.3). The car needs a valid HU (TÜV) for the whole plate period, shown at the office.

Red border only. Yellow short-term plates aren't valid outside Germany.

German road tax for the plate period (€)auto
-

Charged for at least one month, even when the plates are valid for less; worked out from engine size and CO₂ when you press Calculate.

Rarely asked for on this route. Some offices offer it with the plates for €10–15.

Foreign payment charges from your bank, or cash withdrawal fees abroad. Agree the payment method with the dealer in advance.

Press Calculate to see the cash you need at the dealer.

How the car gets home

Driving it yourself needs export plates, fuel and tolls. With a transport service the car travels as cargo, so those fall away and one transport price replaces them.

Fuel for the drive home (€)auto
-

German pumps averaged €2.36 for petrol and €2.43 for diesel on 14 September 2026 (EU Weekly Oil Bulletin); Austria, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia were cheaper, so fill up after the border.

Tied to the plate number. The 18-day wait for vignettes bought online applies only to the annual and 2-month ones. The Tauern and Karawanken sections below are charged separately.

Tauern and Katschberg tunnels, one trip for a car: €15.00 in 2026 (ASFINAG).

Into Slovenia. One trip for a car: €9.00 in 2026 (ASFINAG).

Class 2A, €16.00 in 2026 on the DARS e-vignette site; tied to the plate number.

Category I car: €1.00 at Bregana plus €11.90 to €12.70 from Zagreb istok to the Slavonski Brod exits, on the HAC price list; paid at the toll gates.

Estimate for the motorway sections on the way; each motorway operator publishes its own price list.

Your own outbound trip. Off by default so the total matches the car's landed cost.

Customs value (€)auto
-

Invoice price plus the cost of getting the car to the border (fuel and vignettes). Customs can substitute a catalogue value if the invoice looks low.

Leave at 0 unless you expect customs to change the value. It changes duty and VAT.

-

With EUR.1 the duty is 0%. Without it, 15% of the customs value. An origin statement on the invoice can replace EUR.1 up to €6,000, or at any value when the seller is an approved exporter. Origin means the factory country, not where you buy: a car built outside the EU (Japan, China, Korea, USA) cannot get a valid EUR.1 and pays 15%. A Council of Ministers decision (Službeni glasnik BiH 22/26) lowers or suspends the duty on new electric, hybrid and CNG/LPG cars until 31 December 2026. It covers new cars only; a used car built outside the EU pays 15%.

Import duty (€)auto
-

VAT, 17% (€)auto
-

17% of customs value plus duty. Paid in KM at the customs terminal before the car is released.

At the border the car goes into transit to an inland customs terminal; the agent files the transit and the JCI. Homologation happens before final clearance.

The official price list (Službeni glasnik BiH 50/22) sets 170 KM plus 17% VAT, 198.90 KM, for homologating one passenger car. The default adds about 10 KM of administrative tax for the certificate (klix.ba, 2023); confirm the total at the terminal. The car must meet at least Euro 5, or it fails homologation and cannot be registered.

In FBiH, hybrids and electric cars are inspected without the eco test, about 55 KM; petrol and diesel cars pay roughly 87–99 KM with it. In RS about 47–55 KM. Prices vary by station.

Priced by the kW of the combustion engine written in the registration document (for plug-in hybrids the electric motors are not counted) and by your bonus-malus class. The default is an estimate: klix.ba measured 416 KM for a 136 kW plug-in hybrid with a 50% bonus in 2023, so about 830 KM without a bonus. Get a quote.

Estimate, not checked against a 2026 table. RS is replacing its 2016 road-fee decree; the March 2026 draft gives electric and hybrid cars separate, lower amounts by power, but its adoption could not be confirmed. Klix.ba found in 2023 that RS registers hybrids like ordinary petrol cars. Ask the inspection station.

Water fee (KM)auto
-

About 20 KM in FBiH and 33.60 KM in RS. Estimate, not checked against an official price list.

About 3 KM for newer cars and about 10 KM for older ones under the 2018 RS decision. Estimate.

Sticker, green card and membership fees (KM)auto
-

Sticker about 5 KM, green card 4 KM, plus BIHAMK 8 KM in FBiH or AMS 12 KM and SUP 15 KM in RS. Estimate, not checked against an official price list.

First registration only. Estimate, not checked against an official price list.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to import a car from Germany to Bosnia and Herzegovina?

With EUR.1 the duty is 0%, and 17% VAT is charged on the customs value plus duty. Without EUR.1 the duty is 15%. Homologation, the customs agent, tolls and registration come on top; the calculator adds them all.

Is the duty lower for a used hybrid or electric car?

Only through EU origin: with EUR.1 it is 0%, as for any EU-built car. The temporary duty cut for electric, hybrid and CNG/LPG cars (Službeni glasnik BiH 22/26, until 31 December 2026) covers new cars only; a used one built outside the EU pays 15%.

Are there registration discounts for hybrids in BiH?

Not in the fees this calculator uses: in FBiH hybrids pay a 25% higher road fee under the 2016 decree.

Which Euro standard does an imported car need?

Used cars with a combustion engine, hybrids included, must meet at least Euro 5, or they fail homologation.

Which fees does registration in Republika Srpska add?

The water fee, the AMS and SUP fees, the sticker and the green card, about 70 KM together, on top of the road fee and the vehicle-use tax. All of these are estimates; the inspection station can confirm them.
