Importing a used car to Republika Srpska: duty, VAT and registration

What you pay

  • Customs duty: 0% for a car of EU origin with an EUR.1 certificate, otherwise 15% of the customs value.
  • VAT: 17% of the customs value plus duty, paid at customs.
  • Homologation of an individual vehicle (M1), KMThe official price list (Službeni glasnik BiH 50/22) sets 170 KM plus 17% VAT, 198.90 KM, for homologating one passenger car. The default adds about 10 KM of administrative tax for the certificate (klix.ba, 2023); confirm the total at the terminal. The car must meet at least Euro 5, or it fails homologation and cannot be registered.
  • Water fee, KMAbout 20 KM in FBiH and 33.60 KM in RS. Estimate, not checked against an official price list.
  • Sticker, green card and membership fees, KMSticker about 5 KM, green card 4 KM, plus BIHAMK 8 KM in FBiH or AMS 12 KM and SUP 15 KM in RS. Estimate, not checked against an official price list.
  • Road fee and vehicle-use tax (RS), KMEstimate, not checked against a 2026 table. RS is replacing its 2016 road-fee decree; the March 2026 draft gives electric and hybrid cars separate, lower amounts by power, but its adoption could not be confirmed. Klix.ba found in 2023 that RS registers hybrids like ordinary petrol cars. Ask the inspection station.
  • Air-pollution fee (RS), KMAbout 3 KM for newer cars and about 10 KM for older ones under the 2018 RS decision. Estimate.
