Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to import a car from Germany to Bosnia and Herzegovina?
With proof of EU origin (EUR.1, or an origin statement on the invoice) the duty is 0%, and 17% VAT is charged on the customs value, the duty and the costs up to the first destination in BiH. Without the proof the duty is 15%, or 5% for an electric car. Homologation, the customs agent, tolls and registration come on top; the calculator adds them all.More about: How much does it cost to import a car from Germany to Bosnia and Herzegovina?
Is the duty lower for a used hybrid or electric car?
For a used hybrid, only through origin: with EUR.1 it is 0%, as for any car of proven EU origin, and without a proof of origin 15%. A used fully electric car pays 5% even without one. The temporary duty cut for electric, hybrid and CNG/LPG cars (Službeni glasnik BiH 22/26, until 31 December 2026) covers new cars only.More about: Is the duty lower for a used hybrid or electric car?
Are there registration discounts for hybrids in BiH?
Small ones: in Republika Srpska a hybrid pays a lower environmental fee (factor 0.7) and water fee (19.20 KM instead of 33.60 KM), and Tuzla Canton halves its cantonal tax for hybrids. In FBiH hybrids skip the EKO exhaust test (32 KM for petrol, 36 KM for diesel) but pay a 25% higher road fee under the 2016 decree.More about: Are there registration discounts for hybrids in BiH?
Which Euro standard does an imported car need?
A used petrol or diesel car must meet at least Euro 5 (Službeni glasnik BiH 23/19), or it fails homologation and cannot be cleared or registered; how the rule applies to hybrids is not confirmed. - Export plates: the registration office fee is €31.40 (GebOSt no. 221.3), the plates are valid only as long as their insurance (FZV §45), and German road tax is owed for at least one month (KraftStG §5), on the scale for the car's year of first registration (KraftStG §9) and rounded down to whole euros. The insurance (about €80) and the plates (€20 to €40, ADAC) are estimates. Sources: GebOSt, Nr. 221.3, FZV §45, KraftStG §5, KraftStG §9.
