Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to clear a car from Germany through Serbian customs?
With an EUR.1 certificate the duty is 0%; you pay 20% VAT on the customs value (price plus transport to the border). Without EUR.1 the duty is 12.5%. The calculator above adds every other cost as well.
What is EUR.1 and when do I need it?
A certificate of EU origin stamped by German customs. An origin statement on the invoice does the same job for a car worth up to €6,000, or at any value when the seller is an approved exporter; otherwise EUR.1 is what gets you 0% duty. Origin follows the factory: a car built outside the EU does not qualify.
Do hybrids pay the Serbian vehicle-use tax?
No. Cars with an electric drive, hybrids included, are exempt, so registering a plug-in hybrid costs far less than a petrol or diesel car of the same engine size.
Which plates do I need to drive the car home?
Red-border export plates (Ausfuhrkennzeichen), valid only as long as their insurance. Yellow short-term plates are not valid outside Germany.
Do I pay the 2.5% transfer tax on an import?
No. The transfer tax is not charged when VAT is paid, and VAT is paid at customs. It applies later, when a used car changes hands inside Serbia.

- Export plates: the registration office fee is €31.40 (GebOSt no. 221.3), the plates are valid only as long as their insurance (FZV §45), and German road tax is charged for at least one month (KraftStG §5) on the scale for cars first registered from 2021 (KraftStG §9). The insurance (about €80) and the plates (€20 to €30) are estimates. Sources: GebOSt, Nr. 221.3, FZV §45, KraftStG §5, KraftStG §9.
