Vignettes, tolls and fuel on the drive home from Germany

On the way to Serbia you pay the Austrian vignette (€9.60 for one day), the Hungarian D1 e-vignette (5,550 HUF for one day) and a toll of 850 RSD from Subotica to Belgrade. On the way to BiH you pay the Austrian vignette, €15.00 for the Tauern motorway and €9.00 for the Karawanken tunnel, the Slovenian e-vignette (€16.00 for 7 days), €8.80 to €15.70 in Croatian tolls to the border, and a few KM for each motorway section in BiH, such as 7.00 KM from Zenica to Sarajevo. The Austrian digital vignette and the Hungarian and Slovenian e-vignettes are tied to the plate number, so buy them once you have the export plates. Of the EU countries on the way, fuel costs most in Germany.

Vignettes only after the plates

The Austrian digital vignette, the Hungarian e-vignette and the Slovenian e-vignette are registered to the plate number and the country of registration, so buy them once the export plates are issued. Type the number the way each shop asks (for the Hungarian one, for example, without spaces) and choose Germany (D) as the country. A wrong entry costs you: in Austria, driving with a wrongly registered plate number is an administrative offence; in Hungary, a wrong plate number or country code brings a surcharge; and in Slovenia, the toll counts as unpaid.

The Austrian 2026 sticker (10 days, 2 months or a year), sold this year for the last time, is tied to the vehicle instead and is stuck on the windscreen. In Serbia, in Croatia and on the motorways of BiH you pay at toll stations as you drive.

Austria: vignette, Tauern and Karawanken

Cars up to 3.5 t need a vignette on Austrian motorways and expressways. The 2026 prices, with 20% VAT (Vignettenpreisverordnung 2025, BGBl. II Nr. 225/2025):

1 day: €9.60, digital only, valid for one calendar day, until 23:59;
10 days: €12.80, ten consecutive calendar days;
2 months: €32.00;
a year: €106.80, valid until 31 January 2027.

In the ASFINAG toll shop or app the 1-day and 10-day vignettes can start at once, but a 2-month or annual one bought there by a private person is valid only from the 18th day after purchase, because of the right to withdraw from a distance purchase. At ASFINAG toll stations and vending machines, and at sales points such as ÖAMTC, ARBÖ, ADAC and selected petrol stations, any digital vignette can start at once. Driving without one costs a €200 substitute toll and, if that is not paid, a fine of €300 to €3,000.

The A1 and A4 via Vienna towards Hungary have no further toll. On the way to BiH two sections are paid on top of the vignette, each ticket for one trip in one direction: the A10 Tauern motorway (Tauern and Katschberg tunnels) €15.00 and the A11 Karawanken tunnel €9.00. Tickets are sold at the toll station, where no plate number is asked for, and online, and are valid at once; the Slovenian e-vignette does not cover the Karawanken tunnel. If you go via Graz instead, the A9 Pyhrn motorway has two tolled tunnels of its own, Bosruck €7.00 and Gleinalm €12.00.

The calculator's "Austria vignette" row offers the 1-day vignette, enough if you cross Austria within one calendar day, and the 10-day one; the "Tauern motorway toll (A10, one way)" and "Karawanken tunnel (A11, one way)" rows count one trip each.

Hungary: the D1 e-vignette

The M1 from the Austrian border at Hegyeshalom and the M5 to the Serbian border at Röszke are e-vignette roads (Hungarian Decree 45/2020 ITM, Annex 1). A car up to 3.5 t with up to 7 seats, shown as M1 or M1G in the vehicle category field of its registration certificate, is category D1; one registered as N1, or with 8 or more seats, is D2 (7,890 HUF a day). D1 prices from 1 January 2026, with VAT:

1 day: 5,550 HUF, valid until midnight of that day;
10 days: 6,900 HUF, the start day and 9 more;
a month: 11,170 HUF; a year: 61,760 HUF.

The e-vignette is valid from purchase, or from a later day you choose, and must be bought before you enter a toll section; a driver who enters by mistake has 60 minutes to buy one. It is sold on the toll company's portal ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu, by National Mobile Payment (Nemzeti Mobilfizetési Zrt.) through its website, app and SMS, also in English, and by resellers. Driving without one costs a surcharge of 27,790 HUF, or 95,730 HUF if paid after 60 days.

The calculator's "Hungary e-vignette, category D1" row converts forints to euros at the rate in the "Exchange rate (HUF per €)" field under it. At the ECB reference rate of 23 September 2026, 364.29 HUF per euro, the 1-day vignette is €15.24 and the 10-day one €18.94.

Serbia: toll from Horgoš

Under the Putevi Srbije price list valid from 1 July 2026, 07:00, a category I car (two axles and up to 1.3 m high at the first axle, or a two-axle van up to 1.9 m high and 3,500 kg) pays:

Subotica to Belgrade (Stara Pazova): 850 RSD or €7.50;
Subotica to Novi Sad: 510 RSD or €4.50;
Novi Sad to Belgrade: 340 RSD or €3.00.

Subotica is the northernmost toll station, so from Horgoš you pay the Subotica price. The motorway uses a closed toll system: keep the ticket from the first toll station, because without it you pay the longest distance on the section plus the cost of the special procedure. You can pay cash in dinars or euros, by a card from a Serbian or a foreign bank, or with an ENP tag. The euro prices were worked out at the exchange rate of June 2024: at the NBS middle rate of 23 September 2026, 117.4255 RSD per euro, 850 RSD comes to €7.24, a little less than the €7.50 you would pay in euro cash.

The calculator's "Serbian motorway toll, Horgoš → Belgrade" row is in euros: its €7.24 is 850 RSD at the calculator's default rate of 117.4 RSD per euro. For Novi Sad, enter the euro value of 510 RSD.

Slovenia: the e-vignette

Slovenian motorways need an e-vignette. Class 2A, for vehicles up to 3,500 kg no more than 1.3 m high above the front axle (most cars, minivans and SUVs), costs €16.00 for 7 days, €32.00 for a month and €117.50 for a year; a car taller than that above the front axle is class 2B, at €32.00 for 7 days. You choose the first day, from the day of purchase up to 30 days ahead, and the 7 days include it. Buy it and set the start before you join the motorway, on the DARS site evinjeta.dars.si or in the ASFINAG toll shop; driving without one is fined €300. It does not cover the Karawanken tunnel, which is paid separately (see the section on Austria).

The calculator's "Slovenia e-vignette, 7 days" row uses the class 2A price.

Croatia: toll from Bregana

HAC charges tolls at toll stations, by vehicle class. A category I car (two axles, up to 1.90 m high) pays, with VAT, €1.00 at Bregana and then, from the Zagreb istok toll station to the exit for your border crossing:

Okučani (Stara Gradiška): €7.80, €8.80 in all;
Slavonski Brod zapad or istok (Bosanski Brod): €11.90 or €12.70, €12.90 or €13.70 in all;
Svilaj: €14.30, €15.30 in all;
Velika Kopanica (Slavonski Šamac): €14.70, €15.70 in all;
Lipovac, at the Serbian border: €18.60, €19.60 in all.

Pay cash in euros, by card, or with an ENC device. The toll stations remain in 2026: HAC signed the contract for barrier-free tolling on 24 September 2024 and gives no start date on its own pages; the press has reported March 2027.

The calculator's "Croatia tolls, Bregana → Slavonski Brod" row uses €13.70, the total to the Slavonski Brod istok exit.

BiH: motorway tolls in both entities

In the Federation, JP Autoceste FBiH collects the toll; a car (class I) pays, with VAT (Uredba o naplati naknade za korištenje autoceste A1, Službene novine FBiH 63/24):

Svilaj: 1.20 KM;
from the Sarajevo sjever toll station: Visoko 2.00, Kakanj 4.00, Zenica jug 6.00, Zenica sjever 7.00 KM;
from the Sarajevo zapad toll station: Tarčin 2.50, Bradina 3.50 KM.

You can pay in KM, by card, with an ACC tag, or in euros: notes up to €100, at €1 = 1.80 KM, a rate the decree itself calls discouraging, with change given in KM. The new section from the Doboj jug toll point to Medakovo (7 km) was free until 20 September 2026; its price, reported in the press as 0.80 KM, is not confirmed by an official text.

In Republika Srpska, Autoputevi Republike Srpske collect the toll; a category I car pays:

Gradiška (Čatrnja) to Banja Luka (Jakupovci): 3.50 KM;
Banja Luka (Jakupovci) to Doboj (Kladari): 7.00 KM;
Gradiška to Doboj: 10.00 KM.

You can pay in KM, in euros (notes only, not coins), or by Mastercard, Maestro or Visa.

The calculator's "Motorway toll in Bosnia (Corridor Vc)" row is an estimate of 8 KM; the Svilaj toll plus Zenica to Sarajevo, for example, come to 8.20 KM. Enter the total for the sections you will drive.

Fuel on the way

Of the EU countries on the way, fuel costs most in Germany. Average consumer prices with taxes on 21 September 2026 (EU Weekly Oil Bulletin), petrol (Euro-super 95) and diesel per litre:

Germany: €2.348 and €2.457;
Austria: €1.925 and €2.238;
Hungary: €1.752 and €1.957;
Slovenia: €1.706 and €1.975;
Croatia: €1.796 and €1.975.

So fill up after you leave Germany. The bulletin covers EU countries only, so it has no prices for Serbia or BiH.

The calculator's "Fuel for the drive home" row multiplies the distance, the consumption and the price per litre; its default of €2.00 assumes you refuel after Germany. For an electric car it uses the charging price you enter.

Common mistakes

"Serbian toll prices apply from 1 January 2026." The price list in force applies from 1 July 2026; a car still pays 850 RSD from Subotica to Belgrade.
"Belgrade to Subotica costs 800 RSD." That figure is from July 2024; it is now 850 RSD.
"The dinar price is for Serbian plates and the euro price for foreign ones." Putevi Srbije take dinars, euros and cards from every driver; at the NBS middle rate of 23 September 2026, dinars come out a little cheaper.
"Croatia does away with toll booths in 2026." HAC still collects at toll stations and gives no start date for the new system.
"Sarajevo to Visoko costs 3.50 KM." The official price list gives 2.00 KM for a car.
"In BiH toll is paid only from Zenica to Sarajevo and Tarčin and from Gradiška to Banja Luka." It is also paid from Banja Luka to Doboj, at Svilaj and on the way to Bradina.
