Importing a used car to Serbia: duty, VAT and registration
The rates below were checked on 23/09/2026; the official sources are listed at the end of the page. Every amount is an estimate for planning, not a quote: customs and the registration authority set the final amounts.

What you pay
- Customs duty: 0% for a car of EU origin with an EUR.1 certificate, otherwise 12.5% of the customs value.
- VAT: 20% of the customs value plus duty, paid at customs.
- Homologation (AMSS or other authorised body)Confirms the car meets Serbian technical rules. Estimate: about 10,000 to 12,000 RSD; with a CoC it's a paperwork check.
- MUP administrative feesEstimate: request 430, registration document 880, sticker 270 and a pair of plates 1,490 RSD, 3,070 RSD in all. The amounts are adjusted every year; the police station has the current ones.
- Technical inspectionThe Government's 2022 decision sets 3,070 to 6,020 RSD for a passenger car.
- Transfer tax, 2.5%Not due on an import, because VAT is paid at customs. It applies when you later sell the car in Serbia; the buyer normally pays it.

Cars with an electric drive, hybrids included, are exempt. The amounts are those of the consolidated law as last adjusted for 2026 (Službeni glasnik RS 118/2025).
